Study the Chords of One Part

By default the chord display reads all the chord instruments together. When you want to learn what one part plays, such as the guitar comping or the left hand of the piano, you can point it at that part alone and step through it chord by chord.

Step by step

  • Open the song and go to Settings → Chords & Notation → Chord tracking.
  • Click Follow, then By Track, and choose the part from the list. Use By Group instead to follow a whole instrument family, such as all guitars.
  • In the  Tracks panel, use  Hide all and then click the eye  on your part, so only its notes fall on the roll.
  • Turn on Settings → Practice → Reflect on keyboard.
  • Pause and scrub with the mouse wheel on the roll (Shift + wheel for fine steps). The keyboard shows the part’s exact notes at the playhead, and the chord bar names them.
  • To keep a chord, right-click its name and choose Show on keyboard, or Open in Chord Explorer to hear it and try its inversions. See Live chord display.

 Tip

Follow stays switched on until you change it, even after a restart. A chosen group is remembered too, but a chosen track is cleared when you open another song, and Orfeo then reads the chords as it does in Auto. When you’re done studying, set Chord tracking back to Auto.
