10 Appearance

The Appearance group sets how Orfeo looks: the colour theme, the size of everything on screen and the hints that pop up when you point at things. Setup has App Zoom and Tooltips; everything is in Settings → Appearance. This page also shows where to find your version number, the manual and the update check.

Theme

Orfeo uses a dark theme. A warm light theme is in progress and appears as Coming soon until it is ready.

App Zoom

Makes everything in Orfeo bigger or smaller, the same as zooming a page in a web browser. Use the − and + buttons; click the reset button to go back to 100%. The keys work from anywhere in Orfeo, even while you type in a text field:

Shortcut

Action

Ctrl+ (also Ctrl= and numpad +)

Zoom in one step

Ctrl- (also numpad -)

Zoom out one step

Ctrl0 (also numpad 0)

Back to 100%

The steps are 80, 90, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175 and 200%. Orfeo remembers the level between sessions.

On a smaller screen or window the top step can be lower than 200%, so the window never becomes too small to use. The setting then says Limited to …% at this window size.

Tooltips

Hints pop up when you point at buttons, knobs and icons. The Tooltips switch, in Settings and in Setup, is on by default. Turn it off once you know your way around and the hints stop appearing. A knob still shows its value while you turn it, and Windows’ own small tips, such as file names, aren’t affected. The one-line hints on the engine buttons (GM, Studio, Native) and the playing-mode buttons (Low latency, Balanced, Stable) are tooltips too, so this switch turns them off as well.

Version, manual and updates

Version number

Your Orfeo version is shown at the bottom of Setup, for example Orfeo · v1.5.3, and at the bottom of the Settings window’s group list. Include it whenever you report a bug. Clicking it opens the Orfeo project page on GitHub. In a development build, DEV MODE appears on its own line under the version number, with a tip that explains it.

User Manual

The  User Manual link at the bottom of the left panel opens this manual in your web browser. In the Settings window, Open in user manual at the bottom of every group opens that group’s page.

Check for updates

The  update button sits at the bottom of the left panel, in both the Library and Setup tabs, and Check for updates sits at the bottom of the Settings window’s group list. It behaves differently depending on which build you installed.

Build

What the button does

Installer

Orfeo checks by itself about 5 seconds after start-up. The button then reads Orfeo is up to date, or a dot appears on it while an update downloads. When it reads Update ready — click to install, click to restart into the new version. You can click to check again at any time.

Portable

Opens the download page at orfeo.cc/download, where you can get the newer portable file yourself.

In the Microsoft Store version the button opens Orfeo’s own page in the Store, with its Update button. If a check fails, hovering the button shows why; clicking it then opens the download page instead. The full update routine is in Updating Orfeo.
