Play the Melody Yourself

Karaoke for pianists: silence the tune in the file, keep the rest of the arrangement playing, and perform the melody over it. With a MIDI keyboard connected, the on-screen keys show what you play as you play it.

What you need

Step by step

  • Open the song and the  Tracks panel.
  • Find the melody track. Play the song once and watch which track’s colour line pulses with the tune.
  • Click M on the melody track. You no longer hear it, but its notes still fall on the roll as your guide.
  • Plug in your MIDI keyboard. The on-screen keys now light with what you play.
  • Press Space and perform the melody over the accompaniment.

Variations

  • Test your memory: hide the melody track too with its eye , and play it from memory.
  • Thin the band: turn on Focus Mode to keep just piano, bass and drums behind you.
  • Sing it instead: move the song to a comfortable key with Change key.
