Visual Effects

Visual Effects add a small animation where each falling note strikes the playbar, which makes playback livelier to watch and easier to follow from a distance. They are purely visual and never change the sound or your files.

Turn effects on or off

  • Click  Open settings at the top of Setup, or press Ctrl,, and choose Piano Roll.
  • Click the switch  on the Visual Effects card. Amber means on, grey means off. Effects are on by default.
  • With effects on, the controls for scope, colour, pattern and glow appear in the card.

The seven patterns

Pattern

What you see

Glow Bloom (default)

A soft radial glow that blooms outward and fades.

Ripple Ring

Expanding rings, like a ripple in water.

Particle Burst

Small particles spray upward and fall back down.

Smoke Plume

Soft smoke wisps drift upward, shifting colour as they fade.

Color Aura

A glowing blob that pulses outward while cycling through colours.

Starburst Nova

Sharp radiating rays with a bright flash.

Comet Trail

A bright streak shoots upward with a fading trail.

Hover a pattern in the list to read its description before you pick it.

Scope and colour

  • Scope: click to switch between Piano only (the default, effects for keyboard tracks) and All tracks (every instrument in the file).
  • Colour: by default each effect takes the colour of its track. Click the swatch  to pick one colour for all effects, or type a hex value. The reset button next to it returns to track colours.

Glow: intensity, spread and threshold

Three sliders shape the bloom around every effect. Drag them while a file plays to see the result live.

 Tip

On an older computer, or if playback stutters, try turning effects off or setting the scope back to Piano only. See Troubleshooting.
