Orfeo runs on any reasonably modern Windows PC and doesn’t need a powerful graphics card. This page lists what you need, what’s recommended for smooth playback of busy songs, and how much disk space to set aside.

At a glance

Component

Requirement

Operating system

Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit

Processor

Quad-core, from 2015 or newer recommended

Memory

8 GB of RAM recommended

Graphics

Any built-in graphics from the last decade, with up-to-date drivers

Storage

Less than 500 MB, plus room for any extra soundfonts you download

Internet

Not required. Orfeo plays, practises and edits offline; the internet is used only for optional soundfont downloads, update checks and links you open

MIDI keyboard

Optional. Any USB or MIDI keyboard that Windows recognises

Smooth playback

Simple piano pieces play smoothly on almost any PC. Dense, multi-instrument songs (a full band or orchestra arrangement with realistic sound) ask more of the processor and memory, which is why a quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM are recommended.

The falling notes are drawn by your graphics chip. Any built-in graphics from the last ten years is enough, but outdated graphics drivers are the most common cause of visual stutter. If notes jump or the picture stutters, update your drivers first:

  • Open Settings → Windows Update and install all available updates, including optional driver updates.
  • If that doesn’t help, download the latest driver from your graphics vendor (Intel, AMD or NVIDIA) or your laptop maker.
  • Restart the PC and open Orfeo again.

More fixes are in Troubleshooting.

There are no official macOS or Linux versions. Orfeo is open source, so technically minded users can build it themselves on those systems, but only the Windows version is tested and supported.
