Where Your Data Lives

Orfeo keeps three kinds of data in three places: its own settings, the MIDI versions you save, and the history of each file. Knowing where each one lives helps when you back up, move to a new PC or switch between the installer and portable versions.

Settings and soundfonts

Your preferences, library folder link, favourites and downloaded soundfonts are stored in one app-data folder:

Version

App-data folder

Installer

%APPDATA%\Orfeo\, the standard place for Windows apps

Portable

Orfeo-Data\, right next to the portable .exe. Nothing is written anywhere else.

To open the installer’s folder, press Win+R, type %APPDATA%\Orfeo and press Enter.

Your MIDI files and saved versions

  • Your library folder stays exactly where you keep it. Orfeo only reads it and never deletes or overwrites your files.
  • Saved versions (<song>_ORFEO_v1.mid, _v2 and so on) go into an Orfeo folder right next to the original file. See How saving works.
  • Imported files from MusicXML, Guitar Pro, Capella or karaoke formats are converted once and kept as <song>_ORFEO_IMPORTED.mid next to the source file.

Edit history travels with the file

Each time Orfeo saves a version, it writes a short history entry inside the MIDI file itself. Copy the file to another PC, reinstall Orfeo or switch versions, and File info still shows everything that was done to it. Other MIDI programs simply ignore these entries.

Back up or move to a new PC

  • Back up your library folder, including its Orfeo subfolders. That’s all your music and every saved version.
  • Optionally back up the app-data folder above to keep your preferences and favourites.
  • On the new PC, install Orfeo, copy the library folder back and choose it with Set your MIDI folder in the Library.

Switching between installer and portable

The two versions keep their settings in different places on purpose, so switching doesn’t carry preferences or favourites across. Point the new version at the same library folder and your files, saved versions and their history are all there. Only preferences start fresh.
