There are three ways to open a song in Orfeo, and besides MIDI it reads several notation and tab formats by converting them on the fly. Opening a file never changes it: everything you do while playing stays in the session until you choose to save a new version.
Load a file
Method | How |
File dialog | Click the folder icon at the top left, or press |
Drag and drop | Drag a file from Windows Explorer and drop it anywhere on the Orfeo window. |
Library | Click any song in the Library on the left. |
A newly opened song doesn’t start playing by itself. Press Space when you’re ready.
What happens when you drop a file
Files Orfeo can open
Format | File types | How it opens |
MIDI |
| Directly |
MusicXML |
| Converted to MIDI |
Guitar Pro |
| Converted to MIDI |
Capella |
| Converted to MIDI |
Karaoke |
| Converted to MIDI |
A converted file is saved once as <name>_ORFEO_IMPORTED.mid next to the original, so it opens instantly next time and works with every editing tool. More in Supported formats.
Tip
Finale, Sibelius and MuseScore don’t always export clean MIDI, but they all export MusicXML. Export that instead and open it in Orfeo like any other file.
Unsaved changes
Opening another song closes the current one. If you have unsaved work, for example note edits or a tempo and key you set up to keep, Orfeo asks first whether to Save, Discard or Cancel. The same question appears when you close Orfeo. See How saving works.
Close a file and start over
Click the Orfeo logo at the top left. It closes the current song and resets tempo, key and playback to their defaults, without restarting the app.
